This year has dramatically changed our world and has presented challenges that none of us

could have anticipated. As the world continues to adjust to the impact and new realities of

COVID-19, we continue to change how we work, learn, and live. For the Real Estate Institute of

Canada (REIC), we also are adapting to our changing world and evolving the way in which we

support our Members and aim to make real estate stronger.

REIC has a robust history of supporting real estate professionals and organizations from coast

to coast. While COVID-19 was not the catalyst for the changes underway at REIC, it did cause

us to accelerate our plans and approach. In this edition of Exchange Magazine, we examine

the Educational Transformation underway at REIC. Education is the cornerstone of what

we do, and as the global business world changes, so too do the expectations facing real estate

professionals. REIC recognizes that we must continue to evolve as the industry does. Through

this transformation REIC can play a stronger and leading role in assisting professionals expand

their skills, knowledge, and the value they provide.

Another catalyst for change is the role of digital. While it is no surprise to any of us that we are

in the midst of a digital transformation, this is and will continue to provide new opportunities

and challenges for the real estate industry as a whole. Be sure to read more in the article – Real

Estate in a Digital World.

We would be remised, if we didn’t take a moment to say thank you to all of our Members and

partners. You have stood beside REIC for the last 65 years, and we look forward to a strong and

impactful future. In this edition of Exchange, we have the privilege of celebrating some of our

members as they celebrate monumental Membership Milestones in 2020.

We hope that you enjoy this edition of Exchange.

WELCOME

TO THE

2020

EXCHANGE

MAGAZINE

Recently, we have seen many

changes in the way the real

estate industry functions.

There are new methods for

prospecting, partnering,

managing, and marketing.

Throughout this, there

are some fundamental

characteristics of the Canadian

real estate community

that remain ever the same:

commitment to innovation,

adaptation, service, and

integrity. All of these traits have

driven and shaped the way the

real estate industry has been

using new tools and resources

to evolve in this digital world.

What is digital

transformation and how

does it impact the real

estate industry?

Digital transformation refers

to the use of digital tools and

resources to transform the

way we do business - from

enhancing or replacing current

processes to incorporating

new technology to developing

new and innovative ways for

communicating with clients.

These changes are brought

about by a need to grow with

the changing marketplace and

adapt to what are now

common customer and partner

expectations.

The Canadian real estate

industry is not alone in its need

to adapt to this new and still

unfolding environment.

The digital transformation is a

global event and is considered

our fourth industrial

revolution. As with any

revolution, there are growing

pains and challenges, but with

change comes opportunity and

the real estate industry is at the

forefront.

How is the real estate

industry navigating this

transformation?

The impact of COVID-19

has acted as a catalyst for real

estate organizations to embrace

emerging technologies and

has spurred many new best

practices.

As part of this expansion of

proptech (property technology/

real estate technology), some

very strong innovation has

come in the form of elevated

data management.

With the boost in internet

usage, comes an increase in

the flow and quality of data,

allowing for stronger analytics

and marketplace insights.

New innovations, such as

AI (artificial intelligence),

is helping us maximize

opportunities and streamline

operations on a daily basis,

through the constant tracking,

analysis, and segmentation

of marketing data and client

information.

Digital media opportunities

have also expanded to provide

a variety of resources to real

estate professionals. From

drone imagery to virtual

property tours, digital media

has acted as a conduit for

bringing property information

to real estate prospects, clients,

and partners alike.

REIC Exchange, November 2020

REAL ESTATE IN A

DIGITAL WORLD

A trend that is not likely to

end any time soon, now that

the marketplace has grown

accustomed to the convenience

of this enhanced remote

experience.

With these new operational

and marketing tools, also

comes an increased need for

cybersecurity, to protect both

organizational data and digital

property systems directly.

Cybersecurity is just as

critical to sustainability as

any forward-facing proptech

system that may be put in

place.

Moving forward,

understanding the

disruption, and

adapting.

Incorporate digital resources

and needs in planning

and budgeting, and don’t

underestimate the power of

the analytics, and the role

they play in identifying both

opportunities and risks.

This is just one reason it

is increasingly important

to stay educated regarding

proptech trends and growth.

We also must maintain

a strong focus on

client support and

communication. As clients

become more focused on

digital technology, so must

we, as an industry, to meet

their needs.

As the real estate industry

continues to move forward

through the disruption of

this digital transformation,

and adapt, it is important

for professionals to consider

how the industry may

continue to evolve, along

with potential benefits and

pitfalls.

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER IN 2021

Register for an upcoming REIC course

www.reic.ca

For the last 65 years, REIC has

been the educator of choice for

professionals, corporations,

government agencies, not-

for-profits, and academic

institutions. With REIC

courses and designations,

real estate professionals gain

the knowledge, skills, and

recognition they need to

advance and support their

dynamic career path. REIC

recognizes that although, the

Institute has been a recognized

provider of real estate

education, now is the right time

to enhance its offering and

prepare itself to better meet the

needs of tomorrow.

In 2020, REIC embarked on

a new path to transform its

educational offerings and

enhance the value and support

it provides. The work underway

focuses on developing and

updating REIC’s courses and

designations to ensure its

courses and designations are

purposeful, up-to-date, flexible,

and meet the comprehensive

needs of the real estate

industry.

Enhancing the Value of REIC

Courses

REIC courses help

professionals expand their

knowledge, increase their

productivity, and improve their

performance. Through the

delivery of 23 courses, REIC

works to support the wide

range of professionals in all

real estate disciplines and these

courses help individuals in all

stages of their development

from professionals embarking

on their career to advanced

professionals looking to

continue their professional

development journey.

There is a need to update the

courses to reflect advancements

in the real estate industry, and

for REIC, these course updates

are required on a regular basis.

Updates and modernization

ensure that course curriculum

is current, meaningful, and

reflective of the changing

industry needs, which,

ultimately, enhances the

learner’s experience, attracts

more real estate professionals,

and positions REIC as a leader

in providing exceptional

education programs.

REIC Exchange, November 2020

EDUCATIONAL

TRANSFORMATION:

REIC EMBARKING ON A NEW PATH OF

VALUE AND SUPPORT

“A number of the REIC courses

and designations require

updates,” explained Hafeeza

Bassirullah, Ed.D, Director of

Education and Training, “We

are working in a dynamic and

changing marketplace, and

it is our responsibility and

commitment to ensure that our

courses remain leading-edge

and reflective of the industry.”

Utilizing the insights gained

by undertaking an analysis of

the historical trends of course

and designations is helping

REIC prioritize and focus on

the right updates required.

Over the next three years,

REIC will continue to enhance

its suite of courses, which will

include adding new courses,

creating new ways to learn

and gain value from REIC,

and undertaking any content

updates required to modernize

the course curriculum.

Strengthening and

Modernizing Designations

An additional key priority for

REIC is updating its Fellow

of the Real Estate Institute

(FRI) designation. In 2020,

REIC launched the FRI

Designation Renewal Project,

which is focused on ensuring

a comprehensive framework is

in place to review and renew

the FRI and other REIC

designations.

“In early 2020, we reached out

to the real estate community

to understand their views

of the FRI, and to assess

where the FRI fits into the

career path for professionals,”

explained Hafeeza. “Our

goal was to understand what

enhancements could be made

to elevate the FRI designation’s

profile and purpose.”

A roadmap was developed

to guide the renewal of the

FRI designation and includes

a phased approach to the

designation renewal, which

will be used to update other

designations.

“While we have started with

the FRI, it is our intention to

examine all REIC designations

to ensure they can continue

to support the industry in

the years to come,” further

explained Hafeeza. “The

collaborative process will

leverage relevant and current

real estate information to

strengthen REIC designations

and ensure its sustained

relevance in the future.”

Advancing Delivery

Modalities

The COVID-19 pandemic in

2020 illustrated the need to

diversify the delivery of courses

to meet the needs of learners

and increase the reach of

learners.

For REIC to remain current

and relevant, flexible and

dynamic delivery modalities

are essential for individuals to

be able to learn in the way and

at a time that makes the most

sense for them.

In April 2020, REIC

transitioned all of its courses to

a real-time-remote approach,

which allowed students to

participate in courses virtually.

The implementation of a real-

time-remote delivery modality

has proven successful for REIC

and its students.

“We have had such positive

feedback from our course

participants who moved virtual

with us,” shared Hafeeza.

“REIC will continue to explore

other delivery modalities,

including asynchronous

online courses through a

learning management system,

partnering with colleges and

universities, etc.”

In response to the changing

needs of the real estate

community, REIC has

expanded its use of technology

to better support the sector,

moving courses online to

provide a full suite of flexible

learning modalities, and

continuing to grow digital

resources as it looks towards

the future.

REIC members will continue

to benefit from the transition

underway, and these changes

will help in making real estate

stronger for years to come. For

REIC NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Like many other professionals,

Archana Ramesh found her

calling after falling into real

estate unexpectedly. After

moving to Canada in 2008

following the completion

of her Master of Business

Administration in India,

Archana explored different

options for her career.

With an open mind and

perseverance to find a new job,

she received a call for a role

and joined the City of Calgary.

Within two months, Archana

obtained a new role in the

Calgary Housing Company,

and she hasn’t looked back as

her career has continued on a

growing path.

“Initially, I didn’t know

anything about property

management,” explained

Archana. “I was new to the

country, and I wanted to

restart my career. I was more

looking to giving back to the

community, and housing

is one of the basic needs of

anyone. It fit right into my

interests, as well. Every day, I

help someone, and I see a smile

on their face, and it gives me

satisfaction at the end of the

day that I am doing a good job

and it is satisfying.”

Recently, Archana moved from

the role of Property Manager

to an Application Analyst for

a short-term project. In this

role, Archana has had the

opportunity to not only utilize

her experience in property

management, but she also

is able to use her previous

functional experience in

information technology.

Recognizing the value of

professional development and

credentials, Archana embarked

on a path to becoming a

designated professional in

the real estate industry by

obtaining both the Certified

Property Manager® (CPM®)

and Accredited Residential

Manager® (ARM®).

As Archana explained,

there is tremendous value in

earning a designation as it

increases a professional’s value,

recognition, and knowledge-

level.

“It is not just the three or four

letters (behind your name),

but it also improves one’s

knowledge,” shared Archana.

“From the outside world, yes,

you do gain the experience,

but then the insight of what

actually constitutes that

particular role or what makes

you solid in it - is through

education.”

Archana holds the ARM®

Designation, which she

achieved in February 2015 and

the CPM® designation that she

earned in March 2019. Archana

completed the MPSAXM in

Calgary in February 2019, and

she took her courses via home

study with REIC.

“My initial goal was to

complete the CPM® exam.

When I looked at CPM®, it

was not only for my current

role, but I looked at it from

the broader perspective of my

career,” said Archana. “It was

important for me to complete

it, and have a solid foundation

in my career.”

student’s knowledge of the

concepts, technical skills,

and processes involved

in preparing, analyzing,

and completing a property

management plan.

“At REIC, we are pleased to be

able to recognize and celebrate

individuals that enhance the

professionalism of the real

estate industry by advancing

their educational foundation,”

said Stephen Ashworth, CEO,

REIC.

“Our sincere congratulations

to this year's recipient of the

QuadReal Excellence Award,

Archana Ramesh. QuadReal

award as it embodies the values

of our company in which we

strive for excellence in integrity,

collaboration, performance,

innovation and responsibility,”

said Cheryl Gray, CPM®,

And, Archana’s education

career path isn’t finished.

With a solid commitment to

the industry, profession and

ongoing learning, REIC looks

forward to continuing to watch

as Archana’s career continues

to flourish.

“Growing in different roles

and understanding different

roles, I am able to apply what

I have learned, and put it into

practice. I definitely would

say it has given a boost to my

understanding,” explained

Archana. “I want to gain more

experience and more insight,

and then I am able to apply

it with certain aspects of my

education.”
